There are three basic thoughts before choosing a topic for the science fair. This means narrowing down the project to one specific area. That is breaking down a big project into smaller ones and trying to solve them one by one. The second basic thought is to find out the right difficulty level. And the third one is choosing the right topic that is within the students capability.
